At Rowlatts Mead, our modern foreign language curriculum ensures that all pupils broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words.

Children will be able to speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures. They will be able to engage in conversations; ask and answer questions though stories, songs, poems and rhymes.

EYFS to Year 2 cover simple elements of the scheme. French is then formally introduced to children at the beginning of KS2 and progresses over the four years that the children are at Rowlatts Hill. Children are exposed to some basic grammar rules alongside interactive language learning through a wide range of topics and themes.

The emphasis is on oral activities, but the children will develop the oracy and literacy skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing a foreign language, through a variety of activities including songs, puppet work, role play, games and reading and writing stories.

These aim to develop confidence and enjoyment of learning a foreign language, as well as enabling children to communicate in French.

Our French topics for each year group are as follows:

Impact

Across Key Stage 2, pupils are provided with many opportunities to learn French. This is achieved through creative lessons whereby pupils are able to put their learning into real life situations.

Key Stage 2

Pupils have been working hard across the Key Stage to learn how to greet one another and use this within conversations.
